Frank McAvennie can't understand why Everton agreed to sign Nathan Patterson from Rangers for a potential £16million.

The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has been left baffled by the fee the Toffees have paid.

Rangers announced Patterson, 20, had joined Everton for a club-record fee on Tuesday 4 January.

As revealed by Football Insider (4 January), the right-back has signed a £28,000-a-week contract at Goodison Park.

The Toffees have paid an initial £12million, rising to £16million with add-ons, to sign Patterson.

McAvennie can't understand why Rafael Benitez's side have paid so much.

"I mean that's a lot of money, I don't know why they have paid that," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"They £16million maybe in the future? Really? I mean that's crazy.

"I'm not sure what they are paying for, he's only 20 and only had a few appearances for them.

"He's done well with Scotland but you think it's a club-record fee for a guy who has barely played for them.

"I wish the boy all the best, I hope he does well in England because we need him for Scotland.

"I just don't know why Everton have paid that. That baffles me a little bit, I have to say."

Patterson started just six times in 11 appearances for the Gers this term.

He becomes the second arrival at Goodison Park this month following the capture of Vitalii Mykolenko.
