Glasgow pundit: Rangers star Davis 'won't be at Ibrox next season'

Frank McAvennie claims Steven Davis is playing his last season with Rangers.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has been surprised by the amount of football Davis has played so far this season.

The 36-year-old has made 13 appearances and started in 12 of those outings.

He signed a new one-year contract in March as his previous deal was set to expire at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

Davis remains an important part of Steven Gerrard’s squad with his goal against Malmo keeping the Gers alive in Champions League qualifying.

Glasgow-based McAvennie is surprised Davis doesn’t need a rest after the amount of football he has played so far this season.

“Davis has been playing almost every game for them,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s 36 now. No disrespect to him but surely he needs a rest? Fair play if he doesn’t but I get tired just watching him.

“There are plenty of options in that midfield as well. They signed two in the summer and they aren’t regular starters.

“I know he signed a contract last year, I suspect he won’t be at Ibrox next season.

“As a player anyway. Maybe that’s why they signed a few. They knew Davis will be leaving soon and wanted cover in earlier.

“That makes sense.”

Davis has made 342 appearances for Rangers over two spells with the club.

He has scored 25 goals and registered 75 assists.
