Golden Boot winner salutes 'brilliant' Jota after latest Liverpool development

Kevin Phillips has hailed “brilliant” Liverpool star Diogo Jota as he continues to produce in the absence of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The 2000 European Golden Boot winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old’s game has “benefitted massively” from his move to Anfield.

Jota came up trumps for Liverpool yet again yesterday (23 January), winning a penalty in the final minutes as Jurgen Klopp’s side won 3-2 against Crystal Palace.

The striker scored also a brace against Arsenal to send the Reds to the final of the League Cup on Thursday.

Phillips suggested Jota’s “brilliant” form is “softening the blow” of the absences of Salah and Mane.

“People are now starting to realise now what an important and influential player he is for Liverpool,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He’s a class player, and he showed that yet again the other night against Arsenal.

“Liverpool were expected to struggle with the two lads away at the African Cup of Nations. But when you have a player of Jota’s quality, it will soften the blow.

“He floats around, gets in great positions, runs in behind – and his composure in front of goal is brilliant.

“I think everyone realises now what a quality player he is. When you’re surrounded by quality, you look even better – and I think he’s benefitted from that massively.”

Speaking after the League Cup triumph to Sky Sports (20 January), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp branded the striker “world-class”.

Jota has scored 27 goals in 57 games since completing a reported £40million move from Wolves in September 2020.

The Reds are nine points adrift of league leaders Man City atop the Premier League.
