Graeme Souness provides damning verdict about what lies ahead for Arsenal in 2017

Graeme Souness has provided a damning verdict on what lies ahead for Arsenal in 2017 by stating they “keep falling over” and he “doesn’t see that changing”.

Arsene Wenger’s side host Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, looking to close the 12 point gap on leaders Chelsea in the Premier League table.

A win against Sam Allardyce’s men will see them leapfrog third-placed Manchester City, who were beaten 1-0 by second-placed Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening.

The Gunners were beaten twice in a week in December when Everton inflicted a 2-1 defeat on the London club before they capitulated in the second half to lose against title rivals City.

As the Gunners enter a new year of football, former Liverpool midfielder Souness offered his thoughts on the club and their title chances.

“For the last decade, they have been the bridesmaid instead of the bride and I don’t see that changing this year,” Souness told Sky Sports. “In this holiday period, we have seen them go to City and be outplayed and lose.

“Before that, we have seen them go to Everton in a different type of challenge where it was ‘we are going to get in your face and we are going to make it a physical encounter’ and they didn’t stand up to that.

“They keep falling over at the important times of the season or important times in games and I don’t see that changing.”

Wenger celebrated 20 years at the Premier League giants this season, but he has not lifted the English league title in 12 years.

They finished second last season as Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City pulled off a remarkable triumph by winning the Premier League trophy.

Wenger has seen his sides fail a number of times in their bid to finish top in May as the mentality of the London club has come under scrutiny.

This season they have lost games against the likes of Liverpool, City and Everton, while they have also beaten leaders Chelsea on home soil.
