Granit Xhaka may be named new Arsenal captain after latest twist - pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Granit Xhaka to be named the new Arsenal captain.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Xhaka “looks like a good leader” who has rebuilt his relationship with the Arsenal fans.

The 29-year-old was stripped of the captaincy in October 2019 when he appeared to swear at the crowd when he was booed off when substituted in a game against Crystal Palace.

That was towards the end of Unai Emery’s reign and he has re-emerged as a key player under Mikel Arteta.

The club do not currently have a permanent skipper after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s move to Barcelona in January.

When asked by Sky Sports on Sunday (1 May) whether he would be open to taking the armband again, Xhaka said: “Never say never”.

He did captain the side in their opening two Premier League games of the season and Agbonlahor has tipped him to take on the role full-time.

Asked whether he was ready for it again, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think so, yeah.

“Xhaka has been outstanding. He shows fight and he looks like a good leader.

“The Arsenal fans have taken to him again and you’ve seen stranger things happen. I’ve got no problem with it.”

Xhaka will reach 250 Arsenal appearances across all competitions if he features in their final four Premier League games.

The Switzerland international is under contract at the Emirates until the summer of 2024.
