Hackett can't believe Dele Alli controversy at Tottenham missed by MOTD pundits

Tottenham deserved a penalty for Jose Sa’s challenge on Dele Alli in Wolves’ 1-0 loss on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-FIFA and Premier League referee insisted he fully backed Stuart Atwell’s decision as he “sold it” well.

Dele was taken out by Wolves goalkeeper Sa in the 10th minute after he was one-on-one in the box.

The 24-year-old subsequently scored the penalty to give Nuno Espirito Santo a win on his return to Molineux.

Many fans on Twitter suggested he dived but the incident was ignored by pundits on the BBC’s Match of the Day 2 programme.

It was Dele’s first Premier League goal since March 2020 after he endured a difficult period under Jose Mourinho.

The 37-time England international made 15 appearances in the Premier League last season, including just seven starts.

Asked for his assessment of Sunday’s incident, Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I looked and my first view of it was, that’s a penalty kick.

“The first thing I look at is the position of the referee. Stuart Atwell is the fittest referee in terms of movement, his sprinting ability is outstanding.

“Ok, I could look at it five or six times but I’ve been sold by the decision of the referee with his excellent position and his judgement call.

“For me, it’s a penalty.”

Dele has been playing a deeper role in midfielder under Nuno.

Despite his good start to the season, he told the club‘s in house media team he still has a lot of improving to do in his new role.

In other news, Tottenham have agreed personal terms as a signing is all but done.
