Harvey Elliott set to be axed from Liverpool XI after what pundit has seen

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie has claimed Harvey Elliott will not be a regular starter for Liverpool when players return from injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Jurgen Klopp will not be "happy" having to play Elliott, 19, every week.

The teenager has started all but one of the Reds' Premier League fixtures this season.

There are currently eight Liverpool players sidelined with injuries, including recent arrival Fabio Carvalho and Anfield stalwart Jordan Henderson.

The Reds received a boost as Thiago Alcantara returned to action in a 4-1 defeat to Napoli on Wednesday (7 September).

When asked if Elliott will remain in the starting XI once players return from injury, McAvennie told Football Insider: "He’s a good young player but Europe is a step up from the Premier League there’s no doubt.

"He’ll be thinking ‘this is great’ because he’s getting a run of games for Liverpool. He wouldn’t have foreseen the fact that he’s come in and they keep getting beaten. He expected to go into a Liverpool team that was going to be winning.

"Jurgen Klopp will not be happy that he’s got to play him all the time. He’s only a young boy and he’ll be wanting to monitor his development. The quicker they get players back from injury the better.

"He’ll become a better player just from training with these boys every day. I think he’ll be closer to the first team than he has been for a long time because of the performances he’s put in. I think he’ll be part of the first team squad no matter what.

"Whether he plays every week I’m not sure. Once everyone is back and playing, Jurgen will pick his games rather than being forced to play him all the time. They need the experience back."
