Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Alfredo Morelos “can do better than Rangers” but warned he must start banging in the goals regularly to land January transfer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa star revealed he is a big admirer of the controversial Colombia international.
But he also pointed out how strikers’ reputations are built on goals and the kind of club Morelos wants to join won’t pay big money for him unless he is scoring regularly.
Rangers recruitment chief Ross Wilson revealed last month to Rangers TV that the club had an “agreement” with Morelos during the recent transfer window that they would be willing to sell him if they received a bid matching their valuation.
“I look at Morelos and I do probably think that he can do better than Rangers,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider. “Rangers are a great club but I do feel that he can go to one of the top clubs in Europe and play for a top team.
“He’s got great attributes, he’s a great striker but what he’s got to do now is work harder, keep scoring goals.
“Just because you scored goals last season doesn’t mean you’re gonna get a move next season.
“It’s all about what you do here and now so if he doesn’t get his act together and start scoring goals then clubs won’t be interested, come January or the summer.
“Clubs are only interested if you’re doing it now. So that’s what he’s got to keep doing and if he wants to get a move he knows he’s got to start performing.”
Morelos has scored seven goals from 16 matches this season and also supplied four assists.
But he has netted in only two of the 10 Scottish Premiership games he has played in, failing to make the team for the other four.
