Aston Villa manager Dean Smith and assistant John Terry

Noel Whelan was delighted to hear that Aston Villa were reportedly ready to try everything they could in order to sign Chelsea attacker Olivier Giroud.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the retired attacker claimed you don’t get too many players better than Giroud and he could surprise a few people at Villa.

It was recently reported that Villa have restored hope in their pursuit of Giroud as the forward is growing impatient as while he wishes to join Inter Milan, they’re yet to get a deal done.

Whelan acknowledged that Giroud hasn’t proven to be a prolific striker in the Premier League, but pointed out he is a good target man.

When asked about Aston Villa being ready to throw everything at signing Giroud and whether that’s wise as he’s never been prolific, Whelan told Football Insider: “No, he hasn’t been prolific but as a target man goes…he is good aerially in the box, can hold the ball up and can bring others into play.

“You don’t get too many players better than him, even at his age, he could still do a job, and I think he is one of those players who needs to have a manager who has faith in him and gives him a good run of games.

“He could surprise a few people, and he certainly fits the mould.”

The 33-year-old Frenchman has struggled to feature for the Blues this season, with him making only seven appearances across all competitions for Frank Lampard’s side.

Giroud has played 225 times in the Premier League during his career so far and has scored 78 goals in England’s top-flight.
