Gabriel Agbonlahor has insisted the agent of Newcastle United attacker Miguel Almiron must be “drunk” to claim his client could join a top-six Premier League club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Aston Villa and England striker claimed the Paraguay international needs to improve his end product.

Almiron’s agent Daniel Campos told a Paraguayan radio station, as reported by ChronicleLive, the only reason Almiron did not leave St. James’ Park over the summer was the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “Atletico Madrid were just looking at him. But I think in the future, it’s possible, why not? There are also big teams in England for which they are inquiring about him and we talk.”

Asked by Football Insider whether Almiron had the quality to step up to a top six Premier League side, Agbonlahor said: “Not a chance.

“For his agent to say that he must be drunk.

“For me Almiron has not done anything yet to prove that he deserves a move. He works hard and shows a good work rate but his quality going forward has not been there.

“If you look at his stats and the amount of goals he scores and assists he gets you can’t be thinking of a move away from Newcastle to a bigger club when you haven’t done it at Newcastle.”

Almiron has scored just four goals and contributed three assists in 53 Premier League games since he moved to the north east in January 2019.

This season he has provided just one assist and not scored in seven top flight fixtures.
