Former Celtic defender Andreas Hinkel has claimed that Marvin Compper still has a chance of saving his Hoops career despite becoming an outcast at the club.
The German centre-back was signed from Leipzig in the January transfer window but only made one appearance for the Hoops last season, as injuries took their toll.
Despite the lack of game time, Compper could well be involved in the Hoops pre-season games this season if he gets himself fully fit and Hinkel believes that could prove to be a springboard to saving his career in Glasgow.
“I am sure that he will look upon it as another opportunity” Hinkel said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“The big thing for Marvin will be that he gets a good pre-season in. He has huge experience and he is a very intelligent player.
“He will be hoping that he can get his fitness right and then take it from there. He will believe in himself.
“He will think that if he gets the chance of getting into the team this summer than he can stay there.”
Football Insider verdict
It would be a huge shock if Marvin Compper managed to resurrect his Celtic career, such has been his lack of game time. He has been unlucky with injuries, but it is odd that he didn’t even feature in any of the games towards the end of the season, which were relatively meaningless for the Bhoys. It is worth remembering that he did play well enough in his only appearance for the Bhoys against Morton, and the likes of Jozo Simunovic and Dedryck Boyata haven’t exactly been in great form for the Hoops but have kept the German out of the side. The fact that the Hoops defence struggled at times last season makes Compper’s lack of game time even more bizarre. If the 33-year-old is able to stay fit then there could be a player there for the Bhoys, but he will have to convince Brendan Rodgers that he is a player who can e trusted for the Bhoys, and that will start in the upcoming pre-season games.
