Heaton backed to become Man United number one after agreement reached - ex-manager

Alex McLeish has suggested Tom Heaton could become the new Manchester United number one ahead of his Aston Villa exit.

The former Villa boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford had become “confusing”.

In a statement issued on Friday, Villa confirmed Heaton would leave the club at the end of his contract this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 14th May that the shot-stopper had rejected a new Villa deal and verbally agreed to sign for Manchester United.

The latest news from a source with knowledge of Heaton’s situation is has reached agreement on a two-year United contract.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer currently has David de Gea and Dean Henderson as his senior goalkeeper options.

However, McLeish has insisted the confusion at Old Trafford could hand Heaton a starting role.

McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Possibly he sees a route to being number one. There’s that possibility at Man United.

“It has been a bit confusing over the last year, probably the last season. There was so much speculation about David de Gea, Henderson coming back, in and out. I was always worried when I had to keep changing goalkeepers.

“Heaton, despite his injury, he must still have that ambition.”

Heaton has not played a senior game since suffering a serious knee injury on New Year’s Day 2020.

De Gea started the 2020/21 campaign as Solskjaer’s first-choice keeper at United.

He made 36 appearances across all competitions, including in the Europa League final defeat to Villareal.

However, Henderson started 10 of the Red Devils’ final 12 league games.

In other news, a super-agent has held talks with Aston Villa chiefs over new manager appointment.
