Leighton Baines would be “silly not to sign” a new one-year contract deal with Everton, according to Alex Bruce.

The former top-flight defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he understands why the 35-year-old may want to play more regularly but insists he has to “respect” what he has reportedly been offered.

The BBC report that Everton have tabled a one-year extension offer for the long-serving left-back, with his current terms set to expire in the summer.

He has played just six times for the Toffees this season, with Lucas Digne the current first-choice left-back at Goodison Park.

While Bruce admits Baines might have thoughts of playing more as he heads into the twilight of his career, he believes staying at Everton is not something he can turn down.

“I think he’d be silly not to sign it, I have to say,” Bruce told Football Insider.

“I understand why people getting into the latter stages of their careers, you might want to go and play elsewhere but I think when you get to the latter stages you’ve got to respect the contracts you’re given.

“Get that security and play when you need to. I’m sure Leighton’s got the sense to do that and I’m sure that’s what he’ll do.”

Baines has a total of 417 games under his belt for Everton to date, having joined the club from Wigan back in 2007.

A 30-cap England international, he has only played 14 times over the past two seasons.
