Kevin Phillips has claimed that Bailey Wright would give Sunderland a “strong chance” of promotion next season as the club close in on signing the defender permanently.
The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said that centre-half provides much needed experience for Phil Parkinson’s side both on and off the pitch.
Wright, who spent the second half of the 2019/20 campaign on Wearside, was released by Bristol City earlier this month.
Football Insider revealed that the Australia international has accepted the club’s offer of a two-year contract and an announcement is expected shortly.
He made just five appearances for the Black Cats due to injury but in four of those games the promotion hopefuls kept clean sheets.
When asked by Football Insider if the centre-back would give Sunderland a good chance of gaining automatic promotion next season, Phillips said:
“He definitely gives them a strong chance of getting promoted next season.
“I was very impressed when he came into the side. I was at the game when he got injured, at Oxford, and it was a big blow.
“If they could sign him he gives them leadership, both on and off the pitch, from what I can gather.
“We do not know what is going to happen over the next month regarding the ownership, transfers and if there is going to be a salary cap but if Sunderland want to bounce back, tying down a player like that will be crucial for them.”
