Darren Bent has urged Tottenham to go “all out” to sign Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho on loan this summer.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 27-year-old is a “superstar signing” that could “transform” the Lilywhites this summer.
As revealed by Football Insider, Spurs are willing to sign Coutinho on loan or in a loan-to-buy deal and have been told he will cost an £8million fee by Barcelona.
Bent insists the Brazilian is a low-risk signing after his dazzling displays with Liverpool and admits he would not even consider not signing him for Barca’s asking price.
Bent told Football Insider: “You’re talking about a top, top player who knows the Premier League very, very well. It’s not like you’re taking a risk.
“Coutinho’s a top player, he’s a superstar signing that Spurs need and even if it’s on loan, that’s the sort of superstar that they need to maybe encourage other superstars to come there.
“For me, I’d go all out and pay that £8million, pay that and try and get him. £8million for a top player like him for a year? You take that risk because at the end, you never know, at the end of the year it might work out really, really well. He could transform Spurs into an absolute powerhouse of a team.
“I wouldn’t even consider it – I’d just do it.”
Coutinho already has 152 appearances, 41 goals and 37 assists under his belt in the Premier League after his time at Anfield.
He has netted nine times and set up a further eight goals for his teammates in 32 games on loan at Bayern Munich this season.
