Curtis Jones will be giving Jurgen Klopp a headache at Liverpool after a series of “superb” performances this season, according to Darren Bent.
The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, revealed he had been dazzled by the 19-year-old’s displays and suggested he was now competing with the Reds’ top midfielders for a place in the side.
With the likes of Thiago and Jordan Henderson having missed games through injury, the England under-21 international has started eight times in 12 appearances across all competitions this season.
Jones has started four of Liverpool’s five Champions League games and netted the winner in Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over Dutch giants Ajax.
Bent has lauded the youngster for his “assured” performances in the centre of the park and admitted his manager would be scratching his head over who to play now.
Bent told Football Insider: “Curtis Jones has looked good, scored a good goal and he’s one of them that’s stepped in and looked really, really assured.
“He’s really, really impressed me. Every time he comes on and plays he’s calm, composed, never really rushed, always full of confidence, and I think he’s been absolutely superb.
“In the midfield, you just look and they’ve got strength in depth and they’ve still got players to come back so I think he’s causing Jurgen Klopp a headache a little bit because every time he plays, he plays well.
“It looks like he’s durable, it looks like he looks after himself, so you go Henderson’s going to play, Wijnaldum’s fit, Naby Keita’s never really set the world alight with injuries and Thiago is going to be out until the new year so he’s in prime position to get a lot of games in.
“He looks like, when one of them drops out, he might then the next one to be called upon so there are opportunities for him.”
