'He's available' - Danny Mills names the player Leeds must sign to secure 19/20 promotion

EXCLUSIVE

Danny Mills has urged Leeds United to sign Dwight Gayle to go one better next season and secure promotion to the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United right-back believes the Newcastle United striker is the prolific scorer Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been sorely lacking.

Leeds were guilty this season of continually failing to convert the many chances their fluent attacking style generated and Bielsa regularly lamented how many more chances his side needed to create compared to opponents.

Mills believes Gayle is the proven goalscorer who can add a fresh dimension to the United front line.

“Leeds need a striker this summer,” Mills told Football Insider. “Their top scorer is Kemar Roofe, who’s scored 15 goals in total, which is not outstanding. He’s done well, but it’s not enough.

“Leeds need a striker who can score 20-plus goals. You think of someone like Dwight Gayle, who is far more prolific, and he could make all the difference.

“He’s available as he’s finished his (West Brom) loan and going back to Newcastle, where [Rafael] Benitez doesn’t really fancy him.”

Gayle has spent the season on loan at Albion and extended his outstanding scoring record in the Championship with 24 goals from 41 matches this season before they suffered play-off heartache.

He is contracted to Newcastle United until the summer 2021 but has found himself well down the pecking order under Benitez.

The 28-year-old was loaned out in exchange for Salomon Rondon, whose own future is also up in the air this summer.

In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are in line for multi-million pound windfall as confirmed Spurs transfer on the cards.
