Everton and West Ham are in the race to sign Real Madrid midfielder, Mateo Kovačić, according to a report.

Football website Kick off claim the Spanish giants will consider offers for Kovačić following a disappointing first season at the club.

It is said the Champions League winners have offered the Croatia international to Premier League duo West Ham and Everton.

Kovačić has also been linked with a move to Everton’s rivals Liverpool with the club reportedly told to put in an offer of £24 million for the talented youngster.

The versatile midfielder was recently on international duty with Croatia at Euro 2016, but it is said Madrid are willing to offload their star man to Ronald Koeman and Slaven Bilic’s side.

Everton’s interest in Kovacic comes amid increasing speculation that Koeman is close to signing Belgium international Axel Witsel.

It has been reported that Everton have agreed a fee of £30million with Zenit St Peterburg for the 27-year-old midfielder and are ready to offer the player a deal worth £100,000-a-week.

At 22, Kovačić is regarded as a highly talented footballer with great technical ability and defensive qualities in the middle of the park.

But, after signing for the Madrid club last summer on a six-year deal from Italian giants Inter Milan, the young midfielder has found it difficult for regular football with only 25 appearances last term.

This news will be of a relief to the Everton faithful as they need some midfield muscle after a disappointing 2015-16 season which resulted in the sacking of manager Roberto Martinez.
