'Huge' - Exclusive: Phillips reacts as Tottenham close to reaching defender agreement

Kevin Phillips has hailed defender Max Aarons as a potentially “huge” addition at Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England striker and Premier League coach gave the thumbs-up to the club’s pursuit of the Norwich City right-back.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday that Spurs are working on a summer deal for Aarons, 20, and are close to reach an agreement amid indications he wants to join them.

Phillips is a big admirer of Aarons and believes he can be an excellent complement to another recent young English full-back signing, Ryan Sessegnon.

“He’s young, he’s English – whether he goes into the team straight away remains to be seen but I think, like Sessegnon, who’s playing regularly now, he’s looking like he’s getting better and better,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“All of a sudden you’ve got a left-wing back, you’ve got another young right-wing back in Aarons so he could be a huge addition for Tottenham.

“The biggest thing from his point of view is development. The one question I’d ask, is he going to play week in, week out? Where he has been – Norwich – he’s playing.”

The England Under-21 international has made a huge impact this season for relegation-threatened Norwich after playing a key role in their Championship promotion campaign last term.

Aarons, who signed a new five-year Norwich contract last July, has started 22 of Norwich’s 24 league matches this season and had scouts beating a path to his door.
