Alan Hutton insists a move to Tottenham this summer would be a "huge jump" for Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Scotland full-back admits the Lilywhites need strengthening at the back after a difficult season.

Norwegian publication Sporten report that Spurs have got the ball rolling on a move for the 21-year-old after his agent boldly stated he would not remain at Parkhead this summer.

However, Hutton has questioned how much of the speculation is due to the centre-back's representative trying to stir up interest, especially after his public comments on his future.

Hutton told Football Insider: "Oof, that's a massive step up. That's a huge jump.

"I don't know him personally, I don't know him or his personality but what I do know is he's been a solid player for Celtic.

"Whether, look, I always think when agents are talking too much, a lot comes from the agent, there's a lot of chat put in the press to try and rustle something up.

"On the flipside we know Tottenham's problems and where they're lacking. It wouldn't surprise me if they're looking at a lot of options for the defensive side of it."

Ajer, who arrived at Celtic from Norwegian side IK Start back in 2016, has played 129 times for the Glasgow giants so far.

The 6ft 5in colossus has missed just four games this season, with 49 appearances under his belt across all competitions.
