Scott Arfield will be a “huge miss” for Rangers in this Saturday’s Old Firm derby.
That is according to former Sunderland and England striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the the Light Blues injury problems going into this weekend’s crucial fixture against Celtic.
Gers boss Steven Gerrard confirmed after Wednesday’s 2-0 victory at St Mirren Park that the 32-year-old would be missing for the top-of-the-table clash.
The Canadian joins Ryan Jack in the medical room at Ibrox, the latter sidelined since November with a knee injury.
It leaves Gerrard with Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Bongani Zungu and Joe Aribo as his only fit central midfielders.
When asked by Football Insider if Arfield’s presence would be missed in the Old Firm, Phillips said: “Hugely missed, definitely.
“Losing a player like that at this stage for any club is a blow. He has been integral to the success they have enjoyed this season.
“Steven has a great squad up there and they will cope but it is an Old Firm derby so you want to have your best players fit.
“I am sure Arfield will be gutted to miss it. It is a blow for the player more than anything else.
“Even though there will not be a crowd, the rivalry is intense.
“It is a blow for Stevie G but it gives somebody else a chance to make a name for themselves in one of the biggest games of the season.”
