Chris Hughton is confident of landing the Bristol City job amid speculation the club are targeting Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, Football Insider has learned.

The Championship outfit are searching for a new manager after sacking Lee Johnson two weekends ago.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Hughton has told friends he expects to be appointed the new City manager after holding recent talks.

The 61-year-old has also been linked with manager-less Birmingham City and potentially even Fulham if they fail to get promoted.

Nevertheless, the former Brighton, Norwich City, Birmingham City and Newcastle United manager has been linked up for the Bristol City post and has an offer on the table.

This comes amid an Express report that the club's billionaire City owner Steve Lansdown is eager to lure Gerrard from Glasgow to spearhead his side's promotion pursuit next season.

The Liverpool legend signed a new Rangers deal last December that runs until the summer of 2024.

As revealed by Football Insider, Gerrard has also been approached by Birmingham but he knocked back the Championship outfit.

The 40-year-old is committed to a third season at Rangers and knocking Celtic from their perch.

The Hoops are preparing for a tilt at a historic and unprecedented 10-in-a-row.
