Alan Hutton has suggested behind the scenes issues may have led to Toby Alderweireld’s absence from the Tottenham squad against Newcastle United.
The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ripped into the “laughable” situation after Jose Mourinho’s explanation was proved false.
Speaking on Sunday, as quoted by the Daily Mail, Mourinho stated the defender had only returned to training on Saturday after failing to make the necessary Covid tests to take part on Thursday or Friday.
However, Alderweireld can clearly be seen training alongside his teammates in a video posted to Spurs’ official Twitter account on Friday.
As such, the centre-back is said to be confused by his manager’s explanation for his absence on Tyneside.
With Alderweireld missing, Tottenham went on to draw 2-2 against the struggling Magpies.
Hutton admitted he was well and truly flabbergasted by the situation.
He then suggested off-pitch issues between the pair could have been the cause.
“It makes zero sense to me,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“I don’t understand it one bit. Mourinho actually came out and said he was late from international duty.
“But then he turned up on Thursday morning, when he was supposed to, and trained.
“However, then Mourinho says he hasn’t trained since Saturday and then the pictures and video come out. I mean what are you talking about?

“Is there something going on behind the scenes? Is there something we are missing? I don’t know. That made no sense to say that a player has turned up late and he’s not trained.
“You can physically see him on Instagram or Twitter training so no wonder we’re laughing. That’s what it is, it’s laughable.”
