Hutton verdict on El Ghazi and if he can fill Grealish's shoes at Aston Villa
Alan Hutton has admitted he has been left frustrated by Anwar El Ghazi’s inconsistent performances for Aston Villa.
The former Holte End favourite, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted his old teammate is a “fantastic” player who needs to rediscover his confidence at Villa Park.
El Ghazi scored his first goal since December in the 1-0 win over Leeds but was unable to replicate the feat against Sheffield United.
Hutton insisted El Ghazi had “huge shoes to fill” in the absence of Jack Grealish but admitted his erratic form was letting him down.
Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “He went through a bit of a purple patch, didn’t he?

“He scored five in five, then Barkley came back and he was left on the bench. I can see why he was disappointed and it’s difficult I think for a winger who needs confidence.
“He needs to be playing week in, week out to hit the heights I know he can. He’s a fantastic player, technically very gifted.
“The first game Jack was out against Leicester, Anwar played. However, it wasn’t the high standard I’m used to seeing.
“Against Leeds, huge shoes to fill with Jack out but we started seeing what he’s capable of. I think that comes with confidence.
“Hopefully he can stay at that level because they need somebody like that at the moment. With Jack being out, Anwar is that type of player who can give you a little bit of magic.
“However, keeping him consistent and playing at a good level could be key.”
