Hutton: Guilbert may oust Cash from Aston Villa XI after Smith reveal
The door has opened for Frederic Guilbert to challenge Matty Cash for his place in the Aston Villa starting XI, according to Alan Hutton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Villa and Scotland defender claimed Ahmed Elmohamady’s exit could give Guilbert an opportunity to impress in pre-season.
Football Insider revealed back in March Dean Smith was set to let Elmohamady leave the club with Guilbert his replacement.
Guilbert spent the second half of last season on loan with French side Strasbourg but has now returned to Bodymoor Heath for pre-season training.
Elmohamady left the club at the end of last month when his contract expired.
“I am a big admirer of Matty Cash,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“What he has come in and done in his first season is unbelievable. In the Premier League, he was outstanding.
“But Guilbert will back himself. He’s gone out on loan and had a good time away from the club. “He’s going to come back and prove himself all over again.
“I thought in his first spell he was a little bit rash. He got forward but he just needs to compose himself a little bit if he wants to push to get back into the team. He did look reckless at times, that was the big problem.
“There’s an opportunity there though with Elmohamady moving away. But you’ve also got Young there who can play there as well.
“Matt Cash, for me, is the standout choice. It’s now up to Guilbert, if he wants to stay at the club, he wants to improve, then he’s got to listen to the manager and John Terry and how they want you to play.”
