Alan Hutton has revealed he knew Jeremie Frimpong was the real deal for Celtic when he had Ryan Kent in his pocket against Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the ex-Gers full-back drooled over the teenager’s performance against the winger in the Glasgow derby.
Hutton had already been blown away by Frimpong‘s cavalier attacking instincts but was impressed the right-back could deal with the defensive side of the post.
Ex-Scotland, Tottenham and Aston Villa man Hutton is in no doubt that the 19-year-old has a massive future at Celtic.
Hutton told Football Insider: “I remember the Old Firm game, the big talking point was Ryan Kent against Frimpong – everything he’d done before that was amazing going forward and attacking.
“I was thinking: ‘Here’s your first test defensively.’ He (Kent) didn’t get by him once.
“That’s a massive tick in the box. He’s answered a lot of questions, people probably said well can he defend – he looks quite slight? He’s stood up to the challenge and he’s one I’m definitely looking forward to next season.”
Frimpong was initially the third choice right-back at Celtic when he signed from Man City last summer on a four-year contract.
He failed to make the Hoops’ European squad in early season but has gone on to make 12 SPL starts among 22 appearances in all competitions.
The young defender has scored two goals and supplied four assists from his defensive slot.
