Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a good prospect but isn’t the ‘next level’ signing Leeds United need.
That’s according to Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about reports on Maitland-Niles future.
The Mirror report that Leeds are one of several Premier League clubs keen on signing the 23-year-old from Arsenal.
Maitland-Niles joined West Brom on loan in January after being mainly used as a full back by Mikel Arteta in the first half of the season.
He has been able to play in his preferred midfield role at The Hawthorns but has not been able to improve the Baggies’ survival prospects.
Hutton claims Maitland-Niles won’t take Leeds to the next level but he is still a developing prospect.
“It’s an interesting one,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“It’s obviously been difficult. He’s left Arsenal for West Brom because he had the opportunity to play in the midfield.
“He’s done well but whether he’s going to come in and take Leeds to the next level, I don’t know.
“He’s still young, he’s still developing. He’s a good prospect to have in your squad.
“Whether he’ll come in and start to be the guy to take you to the next level, I’m not so sure.”
Maitland-Niles has made 11 appearances for West Brom but has failed to pick up a goal or an assist.
He could face Leeds on the last day of the season as West Brom travel to Elland Road.
