Alan Hutton has insisted Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez would be a "brilliant signing" for Tottenham as talks continue over a potential deal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender insisted the 23-year-old's capture would help the Lilywhites establish their reputation as a "big club".

A Spurs source has Football Insider this evening the club remain in talks with Martinez's camp over a potential move and are hopeful an agreement can be secured.

Hutton admitted Spurs would likely have to beat several rivals to Martinez's capture.

However, he insisted his signing would set down a marker of ambition ahead of the new season.

"If they want to be seen as a big club, this is what they need to do," Hutton told Football Insider's Russell Edge.

"They need to go into the market and sign big players. This boy, he can score, he can create, make assists. You look at the partnership he had with Lukaku, it wasn't too bad, was it?

"I've told you about the expectations that they have. They see themselves as a top-four club and to be doing that consistently, you have to be moving forward.

"If they could get that one over the line, I think he'll be a brilliant signing. We'll see if it can get done because there's a lot of interest in him."

Martinez scored 19 goals and contributed 11 assists for Inter last season.
