Exclusive: Mills blasts Leeds man in instant verdict on Leeds loss v Wigan
Danny Mills has blasted Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa’s decision not to make more substitutions in the club’s defeat to Wigan Athletic.
The former Leeds and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says his old side were lacking in intensity and energy and that a change of personnel was needed.
Mills was in attendance at Elland Road to see Pablo Hernandez’s own goal condemn the Whites to a 1-0 defeat and slip back to second in the Championship table.
Having seen Bielsa make just one substitution, replacing Ezgjan Alioski for Tyler Roberts, Mills says it was clear something needed to change if Leeds were to get anything out of the game.
Mills told Football Insider: “Created lots and lots of chances, couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net yet again. The goal was a little bit lucky but teams come and have a game plan.
“Leeds lacked a little bit of intensity, a little bit of energy – they put an awful lot into the game the other night but I just don’t get it – why does Bielsa not make a change?

“You’ve got half-an-hour left, he changes Alioski for Roberts and you’re thinking: ‘Right, you’ve got Poveda on the bench, give the young kid a chance, give him 15 minutes.’ Give someone else an opportunity because it was not working.
“It felt like Leeds could have been there for five and six hours and they were not going to score.”
Defeat for Bielsa’s men sees them leapfrogged by West Brom in the Championship title race, the Baggies winning 2-0 against Luton Town on Saturday.
The Whites’ next game comes against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has demanded the EFL take action after a “farce” involving Bielsa’s men.
