'I know Levy...' Exclusive: Ex-Spur warns Tottenham plot may backfire after Sky transfer report

Alan Hutton has warned Tottenham that they will miss out on signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg if they continue to haggle with Southampton.

The former Spurs and Scotland star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims the Lilywhites have already missed out on signings due to Daniel Levy’s hardball approach.

Sky Sports report that Spurs have offered £15million to sign the 24-year-old, £10million lower than the Saints’ valuation, but that they are discussing a potential deal involving Kyle Walker-Peters.

The broadcaster also states that Everton have offered £19million but that the midfielder would prefer a move to north London.

Hutton insists it is typical Levy to try and drive a hard bargain but that it could backfire in Tottenham’s face if they are not careful.

Hutton told Football Insider: “This has been going on for a long time now, it’s been in the papers forever, it seems. It just seems like Tottenham all over, they just always want to get the best deal.

“I know Daniel Levy, he’s very good at what he does, he doesn’t normally back down so it’s a case of that again. It just seems like Spurs have been doing this for years now.

“They do miss out on people because the way Levy is with the signings. If they want him that much they’ll go and get him, it’s an area where Mourinho has chopped and changed and they’ll be looking for someone to go in and play with the likes of Sissoko on a regular basis.

“If they want him, they’ve got to go and get him because there will be other teams more than willing to pay the money for him.”

Hojbjerg played 33 times for Southampton in the Premier League this season but was stripped of the captaincy by manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

He also has 33 caps for Denmark under his belt.

In other Tottenham news, Hutton has suggested there were behind-the-scenes issues after a major player development.
