Danny Mills has issued a damning verdict on the quality of the Newcastle United squad after insisting not one player had impressed this season.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, the former Manchester City and England full-back says that not one of the Magpies’ stars has managed to catch his eye with their performances this season, having won one, drawn one and lost two of their opening four Premier League matches.
Steve Bruce’s men were beaten by Arsenal and Norwich before pulling off a shock win away at Tottenham and sealing a 1-1 home draw with Watford before the international break.
Despite Joelinton and Fabian Schar netting in their last two games and the likes of Paul Dummett and Jamaal Lascelles keeping Spurs at bay, Mills insists there looks to be a lack of quality running through the side at St James’ Park.
Asked if anyone had impressed him in a Newcastle shirt, Mills told Football Insider: “No, no. I worry for them, I worry for Newcastle. I look around and I know they had the good win but where are these performances going to come from week in, week out.
“Where are the goals going to come from? I think it’s going to be another long, hard, tough season for them.”
With the Premier League taking a two-week hiatus for international matches, Newcastle return to action on Saturday afternoon with a trip to table-toppers Liverpool, the Reds having won every one of their league games so far.
Newcastle have not won against Liverpool since 2015, current Anfield star Georginio Wijnaldum wrapping up a 2-0 win after Martin Skrtel’s own goal at St James’ Park.
Jurgen Klopp’s side thrashed the Magpies 4-0 at Anfield last season, Dejan Lovren, Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho all hitting the back of the net.
