Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has claimed that Tottenham’s Harry WInks is exactly what England need going forward after a stunning display in the 1-0 win against Lithuania on Sunday.
The Three Lions ended their World Cup qualifying campaign with three points courtesy of a first-half penalty that was converted by Harry Kane after Dele Alli was fouled.
Although it was the Spurs duo that were involved in the goal, most of the fans and pundits were left raving about Winks, 21, for his display in what was his first senior international cap for England.
Speaking on ITV after the game, Gunners legend Wright hailed the Tottenham playmaker for his display in the centre of the park and his ability to drive the team forward.
He has also backed Winks to put in this kind of performance against some of the bigger internaational sides in the future, even though it was only Lithuania he played against on Sunday.
“The composure to pick out Rashford, he’s got plenty of time. He wants to get forward, look at him go again,” he said on ITV on Sunday, as shown in a video on Last Word On Spurs’ podcaster Ricky Sacks’ Twitter account.
“That’s what you need. And I know what people said about the opposition, but if he’s got that in his mind and he’s going to do that against whoever he’s playing against, he’s going to do well.”
Winks hasn’t been a mainstay of Tottenham’s first-team this season having made only one start in the Premier League.
All together, the midfielder has made seven appearances and has contributed in the wins against APOEL Nicosia, Barnsley and most recently Huddersfield.
Winks now has the rest of the season to impress Gareth Southgate in order to prove himself worthy of a spot on the plane to Russia next summer.
But more performances like what he did against Lithuania, it will surely be very hard for the England boss to overlook the youngster.
