Ian Wright delivers two-word verdict on late Arsenal win v West Brom

By Will Butcher

Ian Wright has claimed Arsenal’s 1-0 triumph against West Brom on Boxing Day was a “crucial victory”.

Target man Olivier Giroud secured all three points late on for the Gunners, as he headed home over the hugely impressive Ben Foster towards the end of the match at the Emirates.

Speaking on Match of the Day on Sunday evening, Wright was delighted to see his old side win as they struggled to break down West Brom’s sturdy defence.

“A crucial victory for Arsenal,” Wright said. “They had six at the back and West Brom defend very well. Arsenal tried to get round the side but West Brom had bodies in the box to stop the danger.

“There were so many bodies to get past for Arsenal, but they got the ball into Giroud and the Frenchman’s goal was a fantastic header.”

Giroud latched onto a Mesut Ozil cross in the 86th minute after a tussle with Gareth McAuley in the box, looping a header over the outstretched Foster.

Arsene Wenger will have been delighted to see his side return to winning ways after losing their previous two games against Everton and Manchester City.

The narrow win for the Gunners sees them open up a four-point gap between themselves and north London rivals Tottenham, who sit in fifth. Spurs have a game in hand though, and they face Southampton away on Wednesday.

Frenchman Wenger now has a selection headache ahead of Arsenal’s New Year’s Day clash against Crystal Palace, as he looks to choose between Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Lucas Perez to lead the Arsenal attack.

In other Arsenal news, the Gunners have been installed as the bookies’ favourites to sign this Ballon d’Or nominee.
