Rangers face new competition from Cardiff City in the hunt to sign Hearts defender John Souttar this summer, Football Insider understands.
Steven Gerrard’s team are keen to land the Tynecastle centre-back, 22, this summer, but they will not make a move until they sell some of their star players.
Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Cardiff have registered their interest in Souttar as they step up plans to overhaul their squad after relegation from the Premier League.
Football Insider revealed last month that the Glasgow giants are keen to sign the Scotland international this summer amid competition from English Championship big guns Derby County.
Rangers are biding their time as they don’t currently have the money to afford Souttar, who is valued at £5million by Hearts.
Gerrard’s side completed the signing of George Edmundson from Oldham Athletic for £700,000 last week but they are still in the market for another senior centre-back after the exits of Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley.
Souttar had an excellent campaign for Hearts that saw his value rise, while he also signed a new contract in January that runs until June 2022.
The Tynecastle club are braced for offers for their prize asset but have no intention of letting one of their prize assets leave without a major fight.
In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that Newcastle United are plotting a sensational raid for Ibrox big name.
