Exclusive: Celtic and Rangers tipped to battle it out to sign Aberdeen star
Noel Whelan insisted Celtic and Rangers will “have their eye” on Sam Cosgrove but expects competition from Championship clubs for his signature.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 23-year-old “has his best years to come” and has the potential of great sell-on value.
Cosgrove has been in fine form for Aberdeen this season, scoring 23 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions.
Championship strugglers Middlesborough and Stoke City are believed to have been monitoring the English striker.
However, with the futures of Odsonne Edouard and Alfredo Morelos less than certain, Whelan believes the Old Firm rivals will be considering an approach for Cosgrove.
“I am sure they will have their eye on him but they will face competition from a lot of Championship teams,” he told Football Insider.

“He has had a very good season. A goalscorer who will be at the right price and the right age. He is not even in his best years yet.
“A player that has a lot of improving to do and could be a good commodity and a good buy for many clubs. He will not cost a massive amount but he could be worth a lot in three years’ time. Sam Cosgrove is an investment.
“Goalscorers do not go under the radar. I am sure Celtic and Rangers are looking at it.”
Cosgrove is under contract at Pittodrie until the summer of 2022 but will likely be available for a cut-price as the Coronavirus pandemic hits clubs financially.
Football Insider understands both clubs are also interested in signing former Sunderland and now Bordeaux striker Josh Maja this summer.
