Exclusive: Hutton says door wide open for Rangers to sign £40K-a-wk PL ace

Alan Hutton believes the door may have swung open for Rangers to launch a move to sign Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers and Scotland defender believes that Ryan Fraser’s move to Tyneside could signal the end of the 25-year-old.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, Rangers are still in the hunt to sign Murphy but that Newcastle wanted to strengthen their squad before letting the former Norwich man leave.

Newcastle are demanding that interested suitors cover the winger’s wages of around £40,000-a-week as well as splash out a £1million-plus loan fee to take him for the season.

The Magpies have since announced the signing of ex-Bournemouth winger Fraser on a free transfer.

Hutton believes that the Scotland international’s arrival at St James’ Park may have opened the door for Steven Gerrard to make his move and prise Murphy from the Premier League side.

“A great signing for Newcastle and that’s the flip side to it, I think that kind of paves the way for him (Murphy) to possibly move out,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“Rangers would be in contact and they would know exactly what was going on with the Fraser situation so if they’re still looking to bring in a winger, I think it’s the perfect time to go and contact Newcastle.

“It would look like his days are numbered with the players coming in. It would be as good a time as any to go and have a bash at getting him. I think he’s a good player, he’s had to go out on a few loans and things haven’t quite worked out for him at Newcastle.

“He’ll be looking for a home, he’s got plenty of football left in him, he’s still young, he’s still hungry so it’s the kind of player I think Rangers will be looking at, with potential, probably hasn’t reached the peak of his potential.

“Maybe Gerrard’s thinking he can help him along the way, I think it would be a good signing, he would add to the squad, he’s definitely going to fight hard for his place and make people work harder around him so it’s a no-brainer for me.”
