Ibrox Exclusive: Hutton wowed as 'Great coup' on the cards for Rangers with talks underway
Alan Hutton revealed he was impressed that Rangers may have a chance of signing attacker Jermain Defoe on a permanent basis.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Gers defender stated it would be a great coup for Steven Gerrard’s side if they sign a player such as Defoe, given his wages.
It is believed Rangers are also discussing Defoe’s future with him directly and that he has told the club’s hierarchy that he’d be willing to take a drop in his £100,000-a-week Bournemouth salary to help enable a deal.
Hutton explained that Defoe being willing to take a pay-cut shows that he must love the Gers and he quickly added that he thought the 37-year-old was a good fit for Rangers.
When asked if Defoe being willing to lower his wages to join Rangers shows how much he loves the club as it makes a deal easier, Hutton told Football Insider: “Yeah, of course, Rangers cannot pay anywhere near that (£100,000-a-week).

“There’s going to have to be a massive drop on his part, and that pretty much tells you where he is at, that he must love the club, must love life under Gerrard.
“He looks happy and he’s the type of lad, I know him quite well, he just loves playing and every time he has come into the team, he has taken his chances and scored goals.
“He seems to have found a home there, he was very much in-and-out at Bournemouth, I can’t really see him going back there and regularly playing given how strong they are up top.
“So, I think this is a good fit, yes it’s complicated with the wage structure at Rangers due to the wages he is on, but if they can come to some sort of deal then everyone would be happy.
“The fans, Gerrard, the player so it would be a great coup for them to sign someone like that.”
Defoe is currently on loan at Ibrox from the Cherries and he has scored 13 goals in the 24 appearances he has made this season.
The former England international has enjoyed a successful career with him having played for high-profile clubs such as Tottenham as well as West Ham.
In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club have opened preliminary talks on signing Premier League player in January.
