Rangers’ bid to sign free agent Claudio Marchisio is doomed to failure due to his wage demands, Football Insider can reveal.

The 55-times Italy international is without a club after leaving Zenit St Petersburg in the summer and can be signed outside of the transfer window.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Rangers have indeed made an approach for Marchisio despite Steven Gerrard laughing off suggestions the midfielder could sign.

Contact has taken place between the Glasgow giants and Marchisio’s camp but he wants a package that would instantly make him Rangers’ top earner ahead of Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe and company.

The Light Blues have decided they can’t smash their wages structure for a midfielder who turns 34 in January, even one with the CV of Marchisio.

Gerrard already has a host of central midfielders available to him, including Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield, Andy King and Greg Docherty.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club have set their sights on landing a ‘top operator’ and have set aside a major cash pot to seal deal.
