Rangers have tabled a contract offer to Birmingham City playmaker Greg Stewart, Football Insider understands.

The Glasgow giants are working on a deal to sign the 29-year-old on a pre-contract with his deal at the English Championship club set to expire this summer.

A source close to the club has told Football Insider that Rangers are eager to beat off competition from Derby County and Stewart's loan club Aberdeen to get an early deal done.

Stewart will be be a free agent at the end of the campaign when his three-year deal with the mid-table English outfit expires.

Aberdeen have made it clear they want to convert Stewart's loan into a permanent transfer but the source explained the club cannot match the offers that Rangers, Derby and other Championship clubs south of the border are putting on the table.

Stewart has scored nine goals and supplied 10 assists from 32 matches in all competitions this season, with the bulk of those coming while on loan at Kilmarnock in the first half of the campaign.

The playmaker has been less statistically successful at Aberdeen but Rangers are convinced he could be an excellent-value capture.
