'Massive come down' - Exclusive: Whelan claims exit likely for £3m Leeds star
Noel Whelan has suggested Barry Douglas won’t be at Leeds United next season if he remains on the fringes of the team.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed the Scotland international is treading water at Elland Road after slipping down the pecking order to third choice left-back.
Douglas was hailed as a master signing by many when he was recruited from Wolves for £3million last year after playing such an integral role in their successful 2017-18 promotion campaign.
But the 30-year-old has not started a match since August and is now behind Ezgjan Alioski and Stuart Dallas in the left-back pecking order.
Douglas came off the bench six minutes into added time for a token run-out in last night’s 2-0 Championship win against Hull City at Elland Road.
“He is behind Alioski and Dallas at left-back,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He’s on the bench at the minute and will remain so.

“It’s a massive come down for Barry Douglas, who we all expected to be a key man.
“Marcelo Bielsa wants his full-backs to play like wing-backs, and Douglas has to become that type of player to get in the side.
“I’m not sure he will be at Leeds next season. He has two players in front of him in his position, and he’s not going to get the nod if we’re in the Premier League. I can see him going.”
Douglas has made just three Championship starts – the last coming back in mid-August – among his 10 appearances this season.
Dallas slotted back into left-back following a defensive reshuffle last night, as Alioski dropped to the bench before coming on to score the second decisive goal.
In the latest Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED there has been a major Ben White transfer development.
