Aston Villa will have to pay a “big fee” and may face resistance from Chelsea if they want to sign Ross Barkley permanently, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Villa striker claimed the club will be in “no rush” to complete a deal and would reassess the situation at the end of the season.
Barkley is currently on loan from Chelsea and has been an ever-present at Villa Park since making the temporary switch.
The England international has earned rave reviews for his performances in claret and blue and has already contributed two goals and one assist in five games.
Asked by Football Insider whether his former club will already be working on making the deal permanent, Agbonlahor said: “There’s no rush.
“I think at the moment they’ve got him on loan for the season, they’ll see how he does all through the season and then judge the situation at the end of the season.
“It might be something they want to make permanent at the end of the season.
“I’m sure there will be a big fee because Chelsea will value him and let’s not forget he’s a similar age to Jack Grealish and if he can keep producing his current form Chelsea will definitely want a high fee.
“Chelsea might even want to bring him back in their team.
“I think we’ve just got to enjoy him while he’s here and try and get the best out of him.”
Barkley moved to Chelsea from his boyhood club Everton in January 2018 but failed to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge.
In his two full seasons in south London, the 26-year-old made just 26 Premier League starts.
In other Aston Villa news, Agbonlahor has identified two never-seen teens as future first-team stars.
