Danny Mills claims that Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is set for an extended spell out of the team after doing himself no favours with his performance in the midweek League Cup win over Arsenal.
The former England full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that Jurgen Klopp’s comments after the game highlight that it was a night to forget for the defenders as the sides netted five goals each.
Gomez, who has just one Premier League start under his belt this season, was brought back into the starting XI for the visit of the Gunners but saw Unai Emery’s side break through time and again at Anfield.
Mills admits that the changes made to the starting XI, with a number of young players included among the matchday squad, was not ideal but that Gomez did not help himself with his performance.
Asked if his performance would hinder his chances of starting on a regular basis, Mills said: “No, it doesn’t help, does it? I think afterwards when Jurgen Klopp said let’s just appreciate the fact it was an incredible game, an incredible attacking game, let’s not get into the tactics, I think he’s right.
“It’s not easy when you change the team, you can play as training as much as you like but when you’ve made so many changes, it’s hard to get that connectivity, it’s hard to get that understanding.”
Gomez has struggled for regular game time this season, battling it out with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren for a place in Klopp’s starting XI.
The 22-year-old has played nine times across all competitions so far, with Matip seemingly the manager’s first choice to partner van Dijk at the heart of the defence.
He failed to make the Liverpool starting XI for today’s Premier League clash at Aston Villa, as he was overlooked in favour of Lovren.
In other Liverpool news, Darren Bent has been left raving over one 18-year-old he has tipped for a huge future at Anfield.
