Michail Antonio will undergo surgery after scan results today confirmed West Ham's worst fears over his hamstring injury, Football Insider has learned.

Manuel Pellegrini was tightlipped yesterday about the severity of the problem sustained by the 29-year-old early in Tuesday's League Cup win at Newport County.

A West Ham source has told Football Insider that test results show Antonio has torn his hamstring and will be sidelined for three to four months.

He will have an operation on the muscle to cure one of the worst injuries of its kind as far as hamstrings are concerned.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday that Antonio's injury is so serious the club's medics could not scan his leg until today as they feared an absence possibly until Christmas.

Those fears have now been realised and the versatile attacker, who can play out wide or down the middle, is now facing an extended period of convalescence.

The loss of a regular scorer and creator of goals is a shattering blow to manager Manuel Pellegrini and the West Ham coaching staff.

Antonio has scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists in 132 matches for the club since signing from Nottingham Forest in 2015.
