Fitness guru Raymond Verheijen is convinced Tottenham imploded in the final weeks of the season because of the methods of Mauricio Pochettino.

The Spurs manager is an advocate of double training sessions each day and working his players to the limit at the club's Enfield headquarters.

But Dutch expert Verheijen believes the Tottenham players were too exhausted to perform at their best as their Premier League campaign reached its finale.

Spurs accumulated just two points from their final four league matches of the season and ended with a humiliating 5-1 defeat at already relegated Newcastle.

Pochettino's side finished in third place on 70 points, a point behind bitter rivals Arsenal, who ended the season comparatively strongly to clinch second position.

Verheijen is an advocate of the 'less is more' periodisation philosophy, methods which he has used with great success with Holland, Russia, South Korea, Wales and the Dutch FA, as well as Barcelona, Chelsea, Zenit St Petersburg and Manchester City.

He sent a series of messages on Twitter on Sunday evening in which he explained why he felt Spurs failed to live up to the standards they had set earlier in the campaign.

Tottenham were the only team challenging eventual winners Leicester in the final weeks of the season until they ended the campaign with draws against West Brom and Chelsea, followed by defeats against Southampton and Newcastle.
