Liverpool fans reacted with excitement on Twitter after Joe Gomez returned to action in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Melwood on Sunday afternoon.

Gomez made a huge step towards his Liverpool comeback, playing 45 minutes in the second-half during a 5-0 friendly victory against Accrington Stanley.

The 19 year-old has not featured for the club for over 13 months after he suffered a serious ACL injury at the start of the 2015-16 season before enduring further set-backs to his recovery in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp organised the behind-closed-doors friendly to allow several first team players an opportunity to play an intense game while the squad are without a number of international stars.

Loris Karius, Emre Can, Joel Matip, James Milner, Alberto Moreno and Lucas Leiva also starred in the 5-0 win but it was Gomez' inclusion which attracted attention on Twitter.

The youngster joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic last summer for £3.5 million and made seven appearances under Brendan Rodgers, with the majority of those in the left-back position.

He was impressive despite learning his trade as a centre-back and Klopp has already expressed his desire to see Gomez return to regular first team action.
