Toby Alderweireld will avoid a lengthy spell on the sidelines but is set to miss Tottenham's next two matches, according to a report.

Sky Sports claim on their website that the central defender is unlikely to return for Saturday's match away at Bournemouth or the EFL Cup tie with Liverpool next Tuesday, but could feature in the home game against reigning Premier League champions Leicester on 29 October.

The Belgium international missed Spurs' goalless draw with Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League after being carried off on a stretcher with a nasty-looking knee injury against West Brom last Saturday.

A scan on Alderweireld's knee on Monday revealed there was no serious damage but the Bournemouth match will come too soon for him.

"It will be difficult (this weekend) because it is very painful but the reaction was good," manager Mauricio Pochettino said, as quoted by the Sky Sports website.

"The scan was clear, no problems but we need to wait because it was a very heavy knock and we have to see. It will be difficult for the weekend."

Eric Dier replaced Alderweireld in central defence against Leverkusen on Tuesday as Tottenham kept alive their hopes of progressing to the Champions League knockout stages with a crucial point.

Spurs are currently unbeaten in the Premier League and have conceded just four goals in their opening eight fixtures.
