Injury expert: James may be out until January after Chelsea latest

Reece James will not return to action until for Chelsea for at least a month and could be out until January, according to Ben Dinnery.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the injury expert who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine suggested James could miss up to 100 days of action in a worst-case scenario.

That would not see the full-back return until the new year.

James limped off before the half-hour mark of the Blues’ 1-0 loss to Man City and Thomas Tuchel told Sky Sports afterwards it was “very painful” but no timescale could be put on his absence.

“It was the biggest injury of the weekend in terms of the chatter on my timeline – he’s a high-profile player,” Dinnery told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“In terms of the impact on Chelsea, I don’t see it having huge potential implications. He certainly wasn’t a guaranteed starter in the Premier League. He offers Thomas Tuchel another option in that backline, but if Thiago Silva hadn’t picked up that knock prior to the game against Manchester City then Reece James wouldn’t have been in that starting XI anyway.

“Tuchel will speak ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League fixture with Juventus and he may or he may not offer a bit of insight into what’s going on with James.

“Just by looking at that coming together with Jack Grealish, that external rotation, it looks as if there’s a problem there. That suggests it could be, looking at the database, the average return to play is in and around 50-60 days.

“The shortest we have on record is around 25-28 days but the longest we’ve got exceeds 100 days.

“As with every single injury, it’s the severity of the problem that you need to consider. From a Chelsea perspective, I’m fairly confident he won’t be involved before the international break and I don’t expect him to travel as part of the England squad.

“Fingers crossed he will return after the break game week eight. If not, we could be looking at the end of October.”
