Insider 'expects' Tottenham to seal deal for 'massive' Spurs fan Sayers 'soon'

Tottenham are set to sign defender Charlie Sayers from Southend after he impressed the club over the last few weeks.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Sayers, 17, has made six National League appearances for Southend this season.

He has spent the last few weeks on trial with Tottenham and started at left-back for Tottenham Under-18s in their game against Fulham Under-18s on 27 November.

Wenham expects Spurs and Southend to come to an agreement over the signing of Sayers, who is a “massive” fan of the club.

“Tottenham have very good links with Southend,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“People are asking why a first-team player at Southend is coming for a trial at Tottenham.

“He trained with the Under-23s last week and if he has anything about himself he will be looking to take the left-back spot in the 23s.

“This comes after the departure of Dennis Cirkin last summer (2021), there is a space for a natural left-footer in that side.

“Does he see a move to Tottenham’s Under-23s with the chance of breaking into the first team at a later date as a risk worth taking?

“I think he probably does. I’m also told he’s a massive Spurs fan.

“I’m sure Tottenham and Southend will soon come to an agreement to take over the rest of his contract.

“The club are impressed with him, they wouldn’t have offered him a trial if they weren’t.”
