Insider reveals how Tottenham came close to signing Leeds sensation Gelhardt

Tottenham “heavily watched” Joe Gelhardt before he signed for Leeds United.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Gelhardt, 19, was handed his first Premier League start against Tottenham on Sunday as Leeds were hit with more injury blows.

He impressed and, as per WhoScored, completed five successful dribbles, at least two more than any other player on the pitch.

The striker signed for Leeds from Wigan in August 2020 and made his first top-flight appearance off the bench last month against Southampton.

Wenham remains “annoyed” Tottenham failed to spot Gelhardt’s talent while they completed the signing of Alfie Devine from Wigan in the summer of 2020.

“I was really impressed with Gelhardt,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Leeds picked him up from Wigan and I know he is someone who Tottenham heavily watched.

“He was in the same youth set-up team as Alfie Devine when we picked him up.

“It was annoying we couldn’t get him because he looked Premier League ready against us.

“I think he will save Leeds a lot of money in the long-term. He looks like he will go on to be a top striker.

“He put some of our players to shame in that disappointing first half.

“I thought he was excellent considering it was only his third Premier League appearance. “

Gelhardt caught the eye in his second league appearance this season after being brought down following a mazy run, winning a late penalty for his side against Wolves.

The penalty was converted and gave the Whites a much-needed win.
