Insider: Tottenham duo could scupper Conte's January plans amid Romero injury update

Tottenham duo Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga could scupper Antonio Conte’s plans to sign a new centre-back in January.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Defender Cristian Romero is set for a spell on the sidelines following what Conte called a “serious” injury on Wednesday.

This has led to some speculation over whether Tottenham will sign a new central defender in the upcoming transfer window.

However, Wenham claims Tanganga, 22, and Rodon, 24, could set up and prove themselves in the eyes of Conte.

“It could be the January transfer window comes and Conte decides against signing a centre-back,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“With Romero out, players like Rodon and Tanganga have a really good opportunity to showcase themselves.

“What better opportunity can you ask for? We have a lot of winnable games coming up.

“These are the games where, if the chance comes, they have to take it with both hands.

“It would be great if Conte could stop worrying about the defence because a player steps up and shows him what he’s all about.

“That gives us another option, an option we really need.”

Tottenham are next in action against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon.

They go into the game coming off the back of an embarrassing midweek defeat to Slovenian minnows NS Mura.
